weight
A weight (mass) converter translates between units across systems β metric (mg, g, kg, metric ton/tonne), imperial / US customary (oz, lb, stone, US ton, UK ton), and scientific (atomic mass unit, slug). The ZTools Weight Converter handles 15+ units, supports compound input (e.g. "12 st 5 lb" common for human weight in UK), distinguishes US ton (2000 lb) from UK long ton (2240 lb) from metric tonne (1000 kg), and shows the conversion factor explicitly. Useful for shipping, fitness, cooking, science.
Use casesβ
Shipping / freightβ
Shipping label in lb; courier API expects kg. Quick conversion saves a math error that overcharges/undercharges.
Fitness / weight trackingβ
UK uses stone for body weight; US uses lb; metric uses kg. Convert across when reading/sharing fitness data internationally.
Cooking from foreign recipesβ
European recipe in grams; US tradition uses pounds/ounces. Convert ingredients quickly and accurately.
Science / lab workβ
Mass in mg/g/kg per spec; calculator confirms unit-conversion math for prep work.
Construction / engineeringβ
Material weights cross unit boundaries on multinational projects. Calculator settles disputes.
How it worksβ
- Enter value + source unit β Numeric input; pick from mg / g / kg / tonne / oz / lb / stone / US ton / UK ton, etc.
- View all conversions β Result in 15+ units simultaneously.
- Compound input (optional) β "12 st 5 lb" or "5 lb 8 oz" parses correctly.
- Choose precision β 0β6 decimals.
Examplesβ
Input: 70 kg
Output: 154.32 lb, 11 st 0.32 lb, 0.07 tonne, 2469.16 oz.
Input: 1 lb
Output: 453.592 g, 0.4536 kg, 16 oz.
Input: 12 st 5 lb (compound)
Output: 173 lb = 78.47 kg.
Input: 1 metric tonne
Output: 1000 kg, 2204.62 lb, 0.984 UK long ton, 1.102 US short ton.
Frequently asked questionsβ
Why are there three "tons"?
US short ton = 2000 lb = 907.185 kg. UK long ton = 2240 lb = 1016.05 kg. Metric tonne = 1000 kg = 2204.62 lb. They differ enough to matter in shipping and engineering β always specify which.
Stone β used where?
Common in UK and Ireland for body weight (1 stone = 14 lb = 6.35 kg). Not used elsewhere. UK media reports human weight as "12 st 5 lb" rather than "173 lb" or "78 kg".
Mass vs weight?
Strictly: mass (kg) is the amount of matter; weight (newtons) is the force gravity exerts. Colloquially we say "weight" but mean mass. This converter handles mass; you wouldn't convert newtons to pounds (different physical quantity).
Is 1 oz of feathers the same as 1 oz of gold?
Trick question β depends on the type of ounce. Avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g) is for everyday weight. Troy ounce (31.10 g) is for precious metals. So 1 troy oz of gold > 1 avoir oz of feathers by ~10%. Tool clearly distinguishes.
How precise are conversions?
1 lb = 453.59237 g exactly (since 1959 international yard and pound agreement). All other conversions are exact rational numbers; precision limited by float arithmetic.
Carat β same as karat?
No: carat (200 mg) measures gemstone mass; karat (k or kt) measures gold purity (24k = pure). Different units for different things; same word origin.
Tipsβ
- Always specify which "ton" β US short, UK long, or metric tonne β they differ ~10β13%.
- For body weight, US uses lb, UK uses stone, rest of world uses kg.
- Cooking: metric (g) is more precise than imperial (oz, cups) β pro bakers prefer it.
- For gold/silver, troy ounce (31.1 g) is standard; for everything else, avoir ounce (28.35 g).
- 1 kg β 2.2 lb β useful mental math (off by 1% from exact 2.2046).
