tip-calculator

A tip calculator computes the gratuity on a restaurant or service bill at a chosen percentage, optionally splits the total across a group, and rounds the per-person amount to a clean number. The ZTools Tip Calculator handles US-style tipping (15–25%) plus custom percentages for any country, supports any group size with even splits, shows pre-tip subtotal, tip amount, and final per-person total in real time, and lets diners round up to a friendly number rather than awkward $13.47 fractions.

Use cases

Splitting dinner bills among friends

A $187 bill across 4 people at 18% tip = $55.16 each. Faster than passing a phone calculator around the table, and avoids the awkward "I had less" debate.

Tipping correctly while traveling abroad

Set custom percentages β€” 10% in many European countries, 15% in Mexico, no tipping in Japan. The calculator adapts; the diner doesn't have to remember conventions.

Generous tipping for great service

Slide to 22% or 25% with a single tap. Pre-set quick buttons (15/18/20/25%) make adjusting the tip during the meal effortless.

Business meals with expense reports

Capture the exact subtotal, tip, and total to enter on a reimbursement form. Copyable totals keep expense logs accurate.

How it works

  1. Enter the bill amount β€” Type the pre-tip subtotal (or the post-tax amount, depending on whether you tip on pre-tax or post-tax β€” both are common).
  2. Pick a tip percentage β€” Quick buttons for 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%, or type a custom percentage. The tip amount updates instantly.
  3. Choose the split count β€” How many people are sharing? 1 (no split), 2, 3, 4… The per-person amount divides evenly.
  4. Round up if you want to β€” Hit "round up" to bump the per-person total to the next whole dollar β€” no scribbled-out receipts.

Examples

Input: Bill: $87.50, Tip: 20%, Split: 3

Output: Tip: $17.50 | Total: $105.00 | Per person: $35.00

Input: Bill: $124.30, Tip: 18%, Split: 2

Output: Tip: $22.37 | Total: $146.67 | Per person: $73.34

Input: Bill: $42.10, Tip: 15%, Split: 1

Output: Tip: $6.32 | Total: $48.42

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Both are common in the US. Post-tax is more generous and increasingly the default; pre-tax is technically more "correct" since tax isn't a service. Most diners just tip on the total and don't worry about it.

What's a normal tip percentage in the US?

Sit-down restaurants: 18–22% is standard, 15% is the minimum, 25%+ for excellent service. Bartenders: $1–2 per drink. Delivery: 15–20%. Coffee shops and counter service: rounding up or 10–15%.

How do I split unevenly?

For uneven splits, calculate each person's subtotal first, then apply the same tip percentage to each. The simple split mode in this calculator divides evenly; for itemized splits, use the Bill Splitter tool.

Why does the tip change when I round?

Rounding adjusts the per-person total to a whole number; that nudges the implied tip up by a few cents. The displayed effective tip percentage updates so you can see the actual gratuity.

Should I tip on alcohol?

Yes, in the US β€” bartenders and waitstaff are tipped on the full bill including alcohol. Some diners tip slightly less on a heavy wine bill, but full-bill tipping is the norm.

Tips

  • Round up the total, not the per-person amount, when splitting β€” keeps everyone's share even.
  • In the US, tip cash for great service even when paying by card; servers often see card tips weeks later.
  • For deliveries, 15% or $5 minimum (whichever is more) is a good baseline.
  • Travel: a quick search for "tipping in [country]" before a trip avoids both undertipping and overtipping.
