memento-mori-calendar

A Memento Mori calendar — Latin for "remember you must die" — visualizes a human life as a grid of weeks. The average lifespan is ~80 years = ~4160 weeks; the calendar shows each as a small square, with the lived squares filled in. Stoic and modern productivity philosophers (Tim Urban's "Your Life in Weeks", Seneca) use this to make finite time visceral. The ZTools Memento Mori Calendar takes your birthdate, draws the grid (one column per year, 52 rows for weeks), highlights weeks lived, and displays elapsed-vs-remaining stats.

Use cases

Reflection / motivation

See concrete weeks remaining. Often catalyses lifestyle changes / priority shifts.

Goal setting

"What do I want to do in the 2,000 weeks I (statistically) have left?"

Wall-mounted reminder. Tim Urban's original popular print.

Group activity / book club discussion

Each member shares their calendar; conversation about priorities follows.

How it works

  1. Enter birthdate — Tool computes weeks lived since birth.
  2. Pick lifespan estimate — Default 80 (US life expectancy). Adjustable based on family history / preference.
  3. Draw grid — One column per year, 52 squares per column. Filled = lived; empty = remaining.
  4. Display stats — Weeks lived, weeks remaining, % complete. Optional milestone markers (graduation, retirement).

Examples

Input: Born 1990 (35 years ago)

Output: Weeks lived: 1820. Weeks remaining (to 80): 2340. % complete: 44%.

Input: Born 1960

Output: Weeks lived: 3380. Weeks remaining: 780. 81% complete — context for life-stage decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Is this morbid?

Stoic philosophy says no — making finite time concrete clarifies what matters. Marcus Aurelius and Seneca wrote about this directly.

How accurate is "80 years"?

US life expectancy ~78 years; varies by country, gender, lifestyle. Tool is a heuristic, not a prediction.

Tips

  • For motivation, pair the calendar with a "what I want in the next 1000 weeks" exercise.
  • Print at A3 size and mount visibly — daily reminder is the point.
  • Adjust lifespan to your family history (longer-lived families: 85-90; shorter: 70-75).
