business-card-designer

A business card designer lays out a standard 3.5×2 inch (89×51 mm) printable card with your name, title, contact info, logo, and brand colors, exporting to print-ready PDF (CMYK ideally; sRGB for digital) or PNG. The ZTools Business Card Designer runs entirely in the browser, supports both sides of the card, common print bleed (3mm), high-DPI export (300 DPI for clean print), and is free of the upsells / add-ons typical of online print services.

Use cases

New-job business cards

Design once, print 100. Generator handles layout; print services (MOO, VistaPrint, local printer) handle the actual printing.

Freelancer client cards

Independent contractor handing out at events. Stock template, swap name + brand colors, ready for cheap small-batch print.

Conference networking cards

Conference-specific cards with QR linking to portfolio + LinkedIn. Print 50; refresh next year with updated info.

Personal contact cards

Non-business contexts: personal contact cards for clubs, hobbies, personal life. Same layout, different content.

How it works

  1. Pick layout — Horizontal (3.5×2 in landscape) or vertical. Single-sided or double-sided.
  2. Add front-side content — Name, title, company, email, phone, website. Logo top-left or center; contact info aligned right or below.
  3. Add back-side content (optional) — Tagline, QR code, social handles, expanded service list. Less is more — readable beats packed.
  4. Configure for print — Add 3mm bleed (extends background colors past card edge to prevent white margins after cutting). Use 300 DPI export.
  5. Export PDF / PNG — PDF preferred for print (vector text, embedded fonts, exact sizing). PNG fine for digital business cards (signed virtual sigs).

Examples

Input: Front: name + title + email; Back: logo + tagline

Output: Single-page print-ready PDF with bleed; submit to printer.

Input: Both sides + QR linking to portfolio

Output: Double-sided card; QR code rendered crisp at 300 DPI.

Input: Minimal text-only design

Output: Single-color, name-only card — very high impact when paired with quality stock.

Frequently asked questions

What's the standard size?

US: 3.5 × 2 inches (89 × 51 mm). Europe: 85 × 55 mm. Japan: 91 × 55 mm. Generator defaults to US; switch in settings.

What's "bleed"?

Extra margin (3mm typical) on all sides where background extends. After cutting, the cut may shift slightly; bleed prevents white edges from showing. Required by all professional printers.

CMYK vs RGB?

Print uses CMYK ink mixing; screens use RGB. Some bright RGB colors don't exist in CMYK and shift on print. For best fidelity, design with print-safe colors or convert before submission.

Where do I print?

MOO, VistaPrint, GotPrint for online; local print shops for fast turnaround. Submit your PDF; many will produce 100-250 cards within a week.

How many should I order?

For active networkers: 250-500 first batch. For occasional use: 100. Don't over-order — info changes; designs evolve.

Is anything uploaded?

No — Canvas processes entirely in the browser. Your design stays private until you export.

Tips

  • Keep critical info 5mm inside the card edge — printer cutting tolerance can clip text near the edge.
  • Use 1-2 fonts maximum; mixing 3+ fonts looks cluttered.
  • White space is a feature, not an absence. Crowded cards look cheap.
  • Test print one card before ordering 500 — what looks fine on screen sometimes prints unexpectedly.
  • Soft-touch / matte finish + thick stock (350gsm+) signals quality more than design alone. Budget there if you can.
